TL;DR — an alternative to Dragon Legal Anywhere

Speech Recognition Cloud Professional is cloud dictation that types at your cursor in any Windows application — Word, Outlook, Clio, Westlaw in a browser, e-filing portals — with no voice training and nothing stored on our servers. It works the way Dragon Legal Anywhere does: cloud-based, licensed to you rather than to a machine, with a mobile app.

  • Dragon Legal Anywhere is ending. New orders stop on 31 December 2026 and it reaches end of life on 31 December 2027.
  • The desktop product is a different kind of tool. Dragon Legal 16 is still sold in the US, but it is installed locally on each computer, not cloud-based.
  • US$159 a year for Speech Recognition Cloud Professional, against a US list price of US$780 a year for Dragon Legal Anywhere.

The honest limitation: it's a dictation tool, not a voice-control system. If you run Word by voice command and macro, desktop Dragon still does that better.

Lawyers were some of Dragon’s most loyal users for a simple reason: legal work is writing, and most lawyers talk faster than they type. Letters, memos, briefs, file notes, emails to opposing counsel — dictation turns a day of typing into an hour of talking.

If you use Dragon Legal Anywhere today, you need a plan within the next year. This guide sets out what is happening, how the remaining options differ, and what each one costs.

Dragon Legal Anywhere closes to new orders on 31 December 2026 and reaches end of life on 31 December 2027. Existing subscribers can keep using it and renew on a pro rata basis until then. Because it is a cloud service, there is no local copy that keeps running after end of life.

Speech Recognition Cloud Professional is a cloud dictation alternative to Dragon Legal Anywhere. Like Dragon Legal Anywhere, it runs in the cloud, is licensed to you rather than to one computer, and includes a mobile app. Unlike it, there is no voice profile to build or maintain.

Dragon Legal 16 is still sold in the US, but it is not an equivalent of Dragon Legal Anywhere. It is a different kind of product:

What that means in practice: moving from Dragon Legal Anywhere to Dragon Legal 16 means going back to software tied to individual machines. The licence limits how many computers you can activate it on, the voice profile lives on each computer, and a new laptop means reinstalling and moving or rebuilding your profile. If you valued Dragon Legal Anywhere because it followed you between your office, home and laptop, a cloud product keeps that way of working.

Mostly, yes. Speech Recognition Cloud Professional uses an Ultra Accuracy recognition model that handles general legal language well from the first sentence, and you can add your own vocabulary for the names and terms it doesn’t know.

Two tools cover the rest:

  • Custom vocabulary — add party names, opposing counsel, judges, case names and unusual terms. It has a character limit, so it’s best used for the words that trip recognition up most often.
  • Text replacements — unlimited. Map a short spoken phrase to a longer block of text: a standard signature, a governing-law clause, a without-prejudice header, a citation you use every week. This is the closest equivalent to Dragon auto-texts, and it’s where most switching lawyers rebuild their shortcuts.

Where to be realistic: a lawyer who has used Dragon Legal for years with a heavily trained profile may still see better accuracy on rare, specialist terms, because Dragon has adapted to their voice and their vocabulary. Speech Recognition Cloud doesn’t build a voice profile, so it won’t learn your voice over time — the accuracy you get on day one is the accuracy you get on day 365. For general legal dictation, the Ultra Accuracy model is designed to work well without any setup. For deep specialist vocabulary, test it on your own work before deciding.

Is cloud dictation confidential enough for client work?

Speech Recognition Cloud stores no dictated audio or text. Audio is transcribed and discarded, the text is returned to your computer, and nothing is used to train AI models. The only customer data held is the email address you sign in with.

The professional rules put the judgement on you. Under ABA Model Rule 1.6, lawyers must make reasonable efforts to prevent unauthorised disclosure of client information, and that includes understanding the technology vendors you use. State bars have issued their own guidance on cloud services, and the American Bar Association’s Formal Opinion 512 (July 2024) addresses lawyers’ use of generative AI tools.

Two points for that assessment:

  • Standard dictation is not generative AI. It types the words you speak; it doesn’t draft, summarise or invent.
  • AI Modes are optional. The Professional plan includes AI Modes that can rework dictated text. If you use them on client material, treat them as you would any generative AI tool under Formal Opinion 512 and your state’s guidance. Many lawyers simply leave them off.

We don’t describe the product as compliant with any rule or opinion, because compliance is a property of how a firm uses a tool, not of the software itself. More detail is on voice dictation for lawyers.

Does Speech Recognition Cloud work in Clio, Word and Westlaw?

Yes. Speech Recognition Cloud dictates at the cursor at the operating-system level, so it works anywhere in Windows you can click into a text field. That includes:

  • Microsoft Word, Outlook and Teams
  • Practice management platforms such as Clio, MyCase, PracticePanther, Filevine and Smokeball
  • Legal research in Westlaw and LexisNexis in a browser
  • Document management systems such as NetDocuments and iManage
  • E-filing portals and web forms

There’s no plugin or integration to install, and nothing to reconfigure when your firm changes practice management software.

Where is desktop Dragon still the better choice for lawyers?

Being straight about it, desktop Dragon — Dragon Legal 16 in the US — is the better fit if:

  1. You need to dictate offline. Speech Recognition Cloud needs an internet connection. Desktop Dragon runs entirely on your computer.
  2. You run your computer by voice. Dragon’s command, macro and scripting capability is far more developed. If you navigate Word, format documents and control applications by voice, Speech Recognition Cloud is not a replacement for that.
  3. Your firm prohibits cloud processing. Some firms and clients rule out any cloud service for client material.
  4. You have years of trained profile data on deep specialist vocabulary and your accuracy depends on it.

Both are Windows only. Neither has a Mac version.

For lawyers and legal staff dictating letters, memos, file notes and emails who liked the cloud way of working, Speech Recognition Cloud does the core job with no training, no machine limits, no profile to rebuild on a new computer, and at a fraction of the cost.

Speech Recognition Cloud Professional is US$159 a year, with a free 30-day Professional trial and a free plan of 20 minutes a month.

Over three years, Speech Recognition Cloud Professional costs roughly a fifth of Dragon Legal Anywhere at its US list price, and less than the one-time price of Dragon Legal 16. Dragon Legal Anywhere’s three-year figure is shown for comparison only — it reaches end of life on 31 December 2027.

Run both side by side for a week, then decide.

  1. Install the free version and start the 30-day Professional trial.
  2. Dictate your normal work — the letters and file notes you’d write anyway — so you’re testing on real material.
  3. Rebuild your top auto-texts as text replacements. Start with the ten you use most.
  4. Add frequent names to custom vocabulary as recognition misses them.
  5. Keep Dragon Legal Anywhere until you’re sure. Existing subscribers can renew pro rata until 31 December 2027, so there’s no need to cut over early.

There’s no voice profile to export or migrate, which also means there’s nothing to lose.

Which one should you choose?

Three questions settle it:

  1. Do you need offline dictation, or full voice control of your computer? If yes, look at Dragon Legal 16 (US) or another desktop product.
  2. Does your firm allow cloud services for client work? If no, desktop software is the route.
  3. Otherwise — test Speech Recognition Cloud Professional on a week of real work.
